Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church

A short introduction in English — who we are, how to visit a church and how to reach us.

The Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church (EELK) is a free people’s church with the right to self-government. It was founded as an independent church in 1917 and is historically the largest and best-known Christian church in Estonia.

Leadership

The spiritual head of the church is Archbishop Urmas Viilma. Bishops Ove Sander, Marko Tiitus and Anti Toplaan lead the dioceses of Northern Estonia, Southern Estonia and Saare-Lääne. The highest legislative body is the Church Assembly; the church government is the Consistory.

Visiting a church

Everyone is welcome at worship, whether or not you are a member. Services are held in Estonian, usually on Sunday mornings. Many churches are also open to visitors during the summer. You can find every congregation, its church and service times on the congregation map (in Estonian).

Estonian congregations abroad

The EELK has congregations and partner congregations in Sweden, Canada, the United States, Germany, Australia and elsewhere.
